So You Have Diabetes. What now?

Updated: Nov 15

So, you've just been diagnosed with diabetes. Wondering what's next? Feeling a bit panicked or confused? Maybe you're worried about how this might change your lifestyle or if you'll still be able to do all the activities you love?

It's completely normal to feel a little anxious and off-balance when you first hear the news. If you're thinking, "What now?" don't worry—we're here to help!

A diabetes diagnosis may seem overwhelming initially, but with proper care, you can lead a normal and happy life. This means regularly checking blood sugar, eating a healthy diet, staying active, and taking prescribed medications. Working closely with your healthcare provider is crucial, as they can customize your lifestyle and treatments to suit your needs and keep you healthy.

First off, what is diabetes anyway?

Diabetes is a condition that affects how your body turns food into energy. Usually, your body converts food into sugar (glucose) and releases it into your blood. When blood sugar increases, your pancreas releases insulin, which helps sugar enter your cells for energy.

In diabetes, this process is disrupted. Either your body doesn't make enough insulin or can't use it well, leading to problems if not managed. And helping you manage it is what we're here to do.

Staying Healthy with Diabetes

Taking care of diabetes is a bit of a journey, and you'll keep learning and tweaking along the way. That’s natural, and is all part of the process, but it doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Here are some handy tips to help you out:

Healthy Eating

It’s time to get creative with your meals. Have some fun with it!

Focus on maintaining a balanced diet rich in a variety of vegetables, fruits, whole grains, lean protein sources, and healthy fats. Keeping your carbohydrate intake consistent and keeping an eye on portion sizes can really help in managing stable blood sugar levels. Trying some new recipes and learning about new flavors can really make mealtime interesting and fun.

It also doesn’t mean you can never have pizza ever again. No food is necessarily off-limits; it's ultimately about achieving balance, portion control, and making informed choices that support your overall health.

Physical Activity

Regular physical activity is a great way to improve insulin sensitivity and manage blood sugar levels, and even small amounts of activity can have a significant positive impact over time.

It doesn’t mean you have to go out and join a gym or get up every morning at 6AM to run a marathon; a little physical activity can go a long way.

Don’t let the idea of exercise overwhelm you. Get outside and take a short walk, get a little fresh air, and think about other activities you might like to do (or maybe used to enjoy before you stopped doing them). Maybe you would like to start doing one of those things again?

It’s OK to start small, but start.

Regular Monitoring

Regularly checking your blood sugar levels is crucial for managing diabetes. This helps you track your health and control your condition better. It allows you to make informed choices about your diet, medication, and lifestyle, leading to a better quality of life and improved health.

Keeping an eye on your blood sugar and knowing how your meds and meals affect it helps you and your health care provider make smart choices about your treatment. Don’t let the process make you nervous. Your provider will team up with you to ensure you're comfortable checking your blood sugar, whether that's using a glucose meter and a finger prick or a continuous monitor linked to your phone. With practice, it will become second nature to you and you’ll become more comfortable in checking your numbers.

Knowledge is power, and knowing your numbers can really help you manage your health condition better, leading to a happier and healthier life overall.

Support and Community

You are not alone in this journey. Support groups and communities, whether online or offline, are packed with helpful tips, shared stories, and plenty of encouragement.
